Devon an Cornwall special constable sacked

He intercepted post in his main job

A former special constable serving with Devon and Cornwall Police has been sacked.

The unnamed officer was the subject of a misconduct hearing last week, but didn't attend.

In his absence, the chief constable, Shaun Sawyer, decided that had the officer still been serving, they would have been dismissed without notice.

In his main job working for the Post Office, the former constable intentionally delayed a piece of post in the system, for which he had accepted a police caution.

That act was found to have breached the standards of professional behaviour in the police service.

It breached the rules on honesty & integrity and discreditable conduct, and was so serious to have amounted to gross misconduct.

Devon and Cornwall's head of professional standards, detective superintendent Paul Kessell said: “The public should be able to trust that all of our officers, whether volunteers or regulars, act with the highest levels of honesty and integrity. The behaviour of the officer fell well below the standards expected within policing.

“Conduct of this kind, whether on or off duty, will not be tolerated within Devon and Cornwall Police and therefore this was the right and proper outcome.”
