Devon drivers caught on their phones in police crackdown

Devon and Cornwall police are hailing a campaign to target motorists on their mobiles a success after dozens were stopped for the offence.

The campaign which ran last week aimed to highlight the very real dangers of driving whilst on a mobile phone.

It was in conjunction with Operation Vortex with unmarked police vehicles patrolling Devon's roads to catch those breaking the law.

In total 48 drivers were stopped for using a handheld device, as well as numerous other traffic offences including 21 motorists with no insurance and 84 stopped for excess speed – 17 of which were reported to the courts for speeding above 95 mph.

Nine vehicles were found to have no valid MOT and seven had no car tax, whilst nine vehicles were seized.

A police spokesperson said they hoped the campaign encouraged some people to never again use their hand held phone while driving.
