Devon recycling centres reopen

Emergency use only

You can take emergency waste to Devon County tips once again - but only in strict categories and whilst keeping to social distancing rules. They'll operate a one-in, one-out policy. Staff won't be able to help with unloading.

The government defines ‘essential use’ as waste that ‘cannot be stored without causing a risk of injury, health or harm to the resident or other members of their household.’

The county council wants the centres to be used only if waste is hazardous and can't be legally and responsibly disposed of in other ways. It operates 19 centre across Devon, but ones in Crediton and Tavistock won't open till Friday.

They've set some other guidelines and rules too:
• People displaying coronavirus symptoms, are asked not to visit the recycling centres.
• Only cars without trailers, with a maximum of two adults per vehicle, will be permitted on site.
• To keep unloading times to a minimum, trailers, vans, pick-ups and commercial vehicles will not be granted access for the time being.
• Payments on site must be by credit/debit card only.

People should use their household kerbside recycling and general waste collections for most items and paper, cans, plastic bottles/packaging and glass bottles/jars won'y be accepted at the recycling centres for the foreseeable future. They ask that unwanted clothing and shoes should be stored at home until charity shops and textile recycling services can resume taking donations.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s cabinet member for infrastructure, development and waste, said; “We understand that storing some waste for long periods may not be safe and that is why, following government guidance, we are reopening our recycling centres for essential use only."
