VIDEO: NHS Nightingale Exeter will trial jab
Hundreds of volunteers have signed up to test a covid-19 vaccine in Exeter.
The NHS Nightingale Hospital at Sowton hasn't yet treated coronavirus patients - the reason a former DIY store was converted earlier this year. As the pandemic was initially brought under control, the new hospital instead began to look after patients for other conditions.
Now it is part of a global race to find a workable vaccine for covid-19.
Craig Lunt, clinical trials director, says it's exciting to be involved in the pioneering work. The Exeter initiative is only the second in the UK to offer the vaccine to trial patients at this stage of the search for an inoculation. Nationally, 10,000 volunteers are needed.
