Plans by Sainsbury's to build a distribution centre near Exeter - which would have created around 450 jobs - have been postponed.
The depot would have been built on the Skypark development near the airport, to supply stores across the south west.
The supermarket company was granted planning permission in 2011 and has invested what it describes as 'significant sums' in preparatory work.
But it's now decided that logistically there is no immediate need for the depot - although there could be in the future.
A spokesman told Radio Exe that this is 'very definitely a postponement, not a cancellation' of the scheme and that Sainsbury's has already invested significant sums of money in preparatory work on the site.
The company will be working with East Devon council, which is the planning authority, to review its options.
The leader of the council Paul Diviani says the news is disappointing, but the reassessment is understandable.
