Summer dog bans end

Seasonal restrictions on taking dogs on many Devon beaches have been lifted for the winter. Many local authorities prohibit dogs from parts of the beach between 1 May and 30 September, However, there are some beaches in the county that adopt a year-round dog beach ban.

Here’s everything you need to know about the dog restrictions on Devon’s beaches:

East Devon

From October to May you may walk your dog freely on all the beaches.

Teignbridge

Dogs are permitted on all beaches in Teignbridge between October and March 31, except past groyne 9 at Dawlish Warren, where dogs are banned all year round.

Torbay

The summer dog ban has been lifted on all beaches in Torbay, meaning from 1 October until 1 May dog walkers may exercise their dog freely on all beaches in the Bay.

South Hams

All South Hams owned beaches allow dogs in the winter months, with the summer ban coming back into force on May 1, while the summer ban at Mothecombe beach is also over.

But the privately owned Blackpool Sands beach adopts a seasonal no dogs policy, which means that dogs are not allowed onto the beach or the car park until November.

North Devon and Torridge

Tunnels beach, Ilfracombe

Dogs are allowed through the tunnels on a lead but not on to the beaches all year around.

Hartland

There is a year-round dog ban in place.

Woody Bay

No dogs allowed at any time of year

Woolacombe beach

Zone A – no dogs between April 1 and November 1; Zone B – on a lead from May 1 to September 30; Zone C – no restrictions.

All other beaches allow dogs from October to April, or all year around
