Exeter City Ladies crowned league champions

Grecians gain promotion in style with 3-1 victory against Keynsham Town

In what's been an incredible season for the red and whites, with more than 100 goals scored, Saturday's victory was Exeter's 16th win in a remarkable 18 league games. As a result, they guaranteed promotion and a first place finish in the South West Premier Division for the third time in the clubs history.

In strong, windy conditions Exeter travelled to Speeds Meadow to face second place Keynsham Town on Saturday (13thApril).

City’s centre forward Sophie Gillies broke the deadlock with two quick fire goals at the end of the first-half to give her side a comfortable lead at the break.

Dani Skinner, who came off the bench as a substitute, added a third midway through the second-half - the attacking midfielder got on the end of Daniella Tyson's free kick to calmly guide the ball past Keynsham's goalkeeper.

In the dying embers of the contest, the hosts eventually breached a stubborn City defence with a goal of their own, but it only proved to be a consolation as it ended: Kenysham 1 Exeter City 3.

The celebrations begin, but they’ll be short lived admits City’s joint-manager Abbie Britton as her side prepare for life in the higher league next season.

"From all involved with the ladies, players, staff, parents and supporters it's been a massive team effort," said Britton.

"The hard work has brought it's just rewards, the players have bought into the free flowing flexible style of football superbly and it's a joy to watch, and scoring over a 100 league goals speaks for itself.

"But the hard work starts soon in preparation for our next challenge, which we are all looking forward to immensely."
