Julia Mercer was accompanied by 40 other protesters chained to Parliament railings; asking UK to sign Nuclear weapons ban
Julia, grandmother of 5, was one of 40 people risking arrest in support of the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, agreed by 123 nations in 2017 and so fa signed by 58 countries.
The treaty has not been signed by any of the 7 nuclear weapons states. It allows signatories to begin a process in relation to nuclear disarmament and offers a procedure for reporting and verified weapons destruction.
The protest began at 13.30pm.today when the Trident Ploughshares group attached themselves to Parliament railings. The atmosphere was calm and a choir sang for hours about peace and war.
Those involved phoned their MP’s, several of whom came out to talk to their constituents.
