Exmouth girl wins national poetry competition

A poem about rugby written by an 11-year-old Exmouth girl has been chosen from thousands to be published in a book.

Alberta Spargue entered a national poetry competition which had more than 12 thousand entries from across the UK.

The book of poems - Busta Rhyme, South West - is scheduled for publication on 31st March 2017.

The schoolgirl plays for the Exmouth Cockles youth rugby team and chose to write her entry about the sport.

Why I Like Rugby

Waking up on a Sunday morning,
Getting ready for the day ahead.
Still hearing people snoring,
When getting out of bed.

Boots, water bottle, scrum hat, gum shield,
That's all I need.
Nearly ready to go out on the field,
after I've done a deed.

Tackle, ruck, pass, maul,
Over and over again.
Continuously running, full fuel,
Even if it's tipping down with rain.

They shout "Three cheers!",
At the end of the match.
Then have three beers,
Not being able to catch.

But at the end of the day,
This team never bends.
Even if they don't get paid,
They're all still friends.

By Alberta Sprague, Aged 11
