First shout of new year

In what was their first emergency of 2023, Exmouth's lifeboat crew have brought three walkers to safety after they were cut off by the tide at Orcombe Point.

A call to the coastguard just before 1.30 p.m. Monday 2 January 2023 set off the process for the RNLI's inshore lifeboat to head east to the area.

Three people were transferred to the safety of Exmouth's lifeboat station in a rescue taking not much more than half an hour. No one was injured or required medical attention.

Helm Harry Griffin, said: “RNLI advice for coastal walkers is to always check the local tide times before embarking. Tide times vary from day to day: a beach that was clear yesterday at 5 p.m. may be covered in sea at the same time today.

"Make sure you have a means of communication and, if you find yourself in difficulty, always dial 999 and ask for the coastguard. We were glad to give assistance and that this shout had a positive outcome.”
