Exmouth seafront revamp given go-ahead

The aim is to reduce the risk of flooding to more than 14-hundred homes and 400 businesses.

The 12 million pound tidal defence scheme has been approved by East Devon District Council.

The aim is to reduce the risk of flooding to more than 14-hundred homes and 400 businesses in the town.

It involves a new set back flood wall being built, but also the redesign of the existing junction between Alexandra Terrace and the Esplanade, which would see the current Morton Road junction with the seafront removed.

Vehicular access to and from the Esplanade and Alexandra Terrace will be maintained while the flood gates are opened, with the gates closing during a flood event to prevent flood water flowing into the town.

The overall  scheme will reduce the flood risk from the current 1-in-25-year risk (4 per cent chance of flooding in any year) to 1-in-200-year (0.5 per cent chance).

The works proposed by the Environment Agency will give added protection to Exmouth from tidal flooding and can be split into three distinct areas.
