Exmouth's blooming new alderwoman

Pat Graham gets a certificate, but no privileges

But no more 7am weeding for Pat Graham

Exmouth has a new honorary alderwoman. Pat Graham served on East Devon District Council for 14 years before she stepped down last year. She unanimously had the title of Honorary Alderwoman conferred on her at a full council meeting on Wednesday night.

The former Liberal Democrat councillor, said: “Thanks to the people of Exmouth who turned up and voted for me. It has been the most challenging time of my life but I had the opportunity to improve the town. It came to a time where I could not do the job properly anymore. There have been many changes in Exmouth during my time – some good, some not so good, but things on the up now.”

She will now be spending more time with husband an" doing some work for Exmouth in Bloom, but "wouldn’t be weeding the streets at 7am in the morning".

Fellow councillors had paid tribute to her. Council vice-chairman David Key Mrs Graham will be "talked of as a special person as someone who has put Exmouth on the map for years to come.”

Councillor Eileen Wragg said: “She has been unfailingly supportive of the town and the people. A stalwart and a real example of what is strong and stable. With the support of each other, she kept going and with great commitment and dedication and great sincerity.”

The law allows councils able to give the title of honorary alderman to they think have given eminent public service. The don't get paid, or any special privileges, but they can attend civic functions and represent the chairman when they're unavailable.
