A referee from Exmouth is to make international rugby history next month when she becomes part of an all-female official team for the Portugal v Italy men’s international in Lisbon.

It's not the first rugby landmark for Devon official Sara Cox.

Earlier this season she become the first female referee to take charge of a Gallagher Premiership Rugby match.

She will travel to Portugal to be assistant referee in the International match, while another England ref, Claire Hodnett, will be the television match official.

Joining the English duo on Saturday 25 June is Scottish referee Hollie Davidson and French official Aurélie Groizeleau, who will assist Davidson alongside Cox.

It is the first time an all-female team have taken charge of a men’s Test match and the first time a female referee will officiate a men’s Six Nations team in a Test match.

World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said: “Congratulations to Hollie, Sara, Aurélie and Claire on this historic appointment.

“Today’s announcement signifies the strength and depth that has been developed in female match officials globally and demonstrates the many pathways available to women and girls wanting to get involved in this great game.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Hollie and her team, one that will also provide excellent preparation for Rugby World Cup 2021, and we wish them all the best of luck.”
