Extinction Rebellion 'banner up' Exeter

Activists break lockdown

Environmental activists from Extinction Rebellion are breaking lockdown to put up banners on Exeter's bridges, claiming the covid pandemic isn't as serious as Climate change

The group says  it is "urging that government works to steer clear of the horror show that would be two degrees of warming or even more." The also want  "more urgency in Exeter’s Transport Strategy which will be discussed at Devon County Council Cabinet" next Wednesday.

Exeter members of Extinction Rebellion have taken such action before, but not during a legal lockdown, which has only a narrow range of reasons why people should leave their homes. Erecting political banners is not one of the acceptable reasons.

Maurice Spurway of Extinction Rebellion Exeter said; "We must all remember that the climate and ecological emergency is far, far more serious than the covid emergency.  That is why Extinction Rebellion is continuing to call the government and authorities to account.  Our banners will be managed by two masked, socially distanced people at a time, and we have carried out a covid risk assessment to ensure that everyone remains safe during the protest."

The banners read:

  • ‘Act Now’
  • ‘UK air pollution will kill 100 people today’
  • ‘Planet Before Profit’
  • ‘Climate change!  Driving us all to destruction’
