GWR staff shortages due to World Cup

Trains on cup final day may be cancelled or delayed

"Significantly reduced number of staff" leads to cancellations

At least six trains between Devon and London have been cancelled today because of the World Cup final, the start of some school holidays and the hot weather.

Great Western Railway says the combination, together with some engineering work, means they have "significantly fewer staff available" to work.

The timetable's been altered, and GWR says others they expect trains to be extremely busy and less frequent across all their routes.

GWR tickets will be valid on the following Stagecoach bus services in Devon today:

  • Number 2: Newton Abbot - Teignmouth - Dawlish - Starcross - Exeter
  • Numner 12: Newton Abbot - Torre - Torquay - Paignton
  • Gold: Torquay - Paignton - Totnes - Ivybridge - Plymouth
  • X38: Exeter - Ivybridge - Plymouth

The train company, which frequently fines customers for trying to buy tickets on trains, says it won't charge its usual £10 administration fee for people who chose not to travel on trains that have been changed or cancelled today. Its lifting ticket restrictions tomorrow.

It outlines details on its website, but hasn't apologised.
