Hazardous materials at Exmouth fire

Firefighters work at the rear of the EuroTech factory, Exmouth

Eurotech factory sealed off; homes may be evacuated

Dozens of firefighters from Exmouth, Middlemoor, Colyton, central Exeter, Ottery St Mar, Budleigh Salterton, Newton Abbot and Sidmouth have been involved in an incident at an Exmouth factory.

EuroTech, which makes printed circuit boards at it based near Dinan Way and the town's Lidl supermarket, has been taped off. A toxic smell pervades the streets around, since the alarm was raised at 4pm on Sunday. Although police were being called upon to possibly help evacuate homes and close nearby roads, there was no sign of that by 6.45 pm, although water was being pumped through to the site from a rear standpipe. A dry powder extinguisher has been deployed as well as hose reel jets.

The fire is on the ground floor of the two-storey building, which is heavily smoke-logged. Given concerns about substances involved, an environmental protection unit is also involved.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue reported that 10 fire engines have been involved. Nearby residents have been advised to keep windows closed.

EuroTech employs about 150 people at the Exmouth factory.
