The Government's being urged to abandon its plans to capture the wild beavers living on the River Otter... by the national charity Friends of the Earth.
In a letter to the Environment Secretary, they say trapping the beavers could be illegal... as they're native to Britain and are probably covered by EU laws on protected species.
They also say DEFRA's claim that the beavers could be diseased doesn't carry much weight - and even if they are, it would take just a day to test them, rather than trapping them and removing them from the wild.
