Investigation underway following six burglaries in Sidmouth

Police in East Devon have issued a warning to the public following a number of burglaries in the area.

The Incidents are believed to be linked. Detective Constable Matt Burnell, said: “Over the past two months there have been six dwelling burglaries in the Sidmouth area.

“The vast majority of properties targeted are detached bungalows and entry is generally forced to windows at the rear of properties. It also appears that the offenders are focussing on stealing jewellery.

“Three properties were in Higher Woolbrook Park which was believed to have been targeted overnight on February 18. Newlands Close was April 9, and Harcombe Lane a couple of days later. We believe there was also an incident in Meadow View in March.

“Jewellery taken has included sapphire and amethyst rings, necklaces and a Buckingham palace charm. We would like to hear from anyone who has been offered jewellery for sale in the area recently as this could help with our enquiries.

“Please can residents also remain vigilant for any suspicious activity including non-official door knockers and ensure that they report such activity to police as soon as possible.

“There has been one report that referenced small silver hatchback being driven around the Higher Woolbrook Park area near the time of the first burglary; this may have been completely innocent, but if residents notice anything suspicious including unfamiliar vehicles or people in residential areas, then please contact the police on 101."
