"Know your knots", says Exmouth Coastguard

Dingy spotted with no one on board results in knotty questions for owner

Exmouth’s coastguards have asked boatowners to tie better knots, after being called out yesterday to a dingy seen drifting between Orcombe Point and Sandy Bay without anyone on board. Although its motor was cold, there was plenty of fuel in the tank, but no tender line.

But just as they were removing the boat, a man told them he’d swum ashore from the dingy, after using it to get nearer the shore from his yacht. Coastguards say the moral is: “know your knots”

That comes two days after four people were rescued from a sinking dingy on the River Exe between Turf Locks and Topsham. Their boat is thought to have hit an object in the estuary as the light was fading. They were found waist deep in water. The RNLI says they’re very lucky.
