Low recycling rate criticised in Exeter

Exeter has been criticised for its low recycling rates. The city council is now advising people on how they can help boost the figures..

The council claims that the city has a reputation for being an environmentally conscious place, and yet its recycling rates fall very short of the national average.

Residents in Exeter recycle or re-use just 35 per cent of household waste, compared with 55 per cent for Devon county council and 45 per cent in East Devon.

In a national table Exeter is ranked 276 out of 352 councils.

The city council say one of the problems is that too much organic waste is going to landfill as they don't currently offer a service for this.  They are, however reminding people that they can compost food waste themselves and are offering discounted composters to residents.
