Thirty year old James Woodhouse's body was found in Okehampton Road earlier this week.
37 year old Brett Edwards appeared via video link at Exeter magistrates court this morning and then the city's Crown Court this afternoon.
His solicitor said he's pleading not guilty and denies any involvement in the death.
Mr Woodhouse was originally from the North West, but had lived in Exeter for seven years.
It's not been revealed how he died, but there are reports his body was found inside a black refuse bin.
