Force refers itself to Office for Police Conduct
A man in his twenties who is thought to have run away after the car he was travelling in was stopped by police in Newton Abbot on Wednesday night is in a serious condition in hospital.
Officers carried out a stop check on a vehicle in the town centre at around 11.15pm when four people got out and fled.
The driver and a passenger were arrested at the scene on suspicion of drugs offences and were still in custody on Thursday afternoon.
A short time later officers were made aware of an injured man in Bearnes Lane. He has multiple serious injuries and remains in hospital. The circumstances of this are being investigated.
Officers located a fourth person at home and have carried out a welfare check.
Devon & Cornwall Police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as is normal procedure in these circumstances.
Anyone with information which may help is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 992 of Wednesday 14 May.
