Man suffers smoke inhalation after barn fire

Crews from across the region were called to the blaze at Seaton

A man has been treated for smoke inhalation and a number of animals rescued – after a major barn fire in East Devon overnight.

Crews from across Devon & Somerset were called to the incident at Seaton just after 10pm [17 January] and confirmed smoke and flames coming from the barn.

They also said ’low hazard’ asbestos was present, and informed the Environment Agency and Public Health England, while a vet was called to treat the injured calves.

At 3am, the fire service said: “This incident has now been scaled back with all fire fighting appliances being relived from the scene.

“The barn will be allowed to burn out under supervision for the next few hours. This incident remains sectorised and compressed air foam jets are still in use.”

Updates to follow.
