A memorial bench installed 3 weeks ago has been swallowed up an 8ft sink hole.

It appeared overnight near St James Weir.

The council is now working on stabilising the bank and filling the hole.

The area is cordoned off and the public is being asked to avoid the area.

David Bartram is Director of Place at Exeter City Council. Speaking to Radio Exe, he said: " We were called by the police this morning to reports of a large sinkhole and it's on our land. What appears to have been happening is the river has started erroding, unseen, underground. So water has been getting in somewhere and the ground on top has just collapsed."

"We've made it safe and will try to fill the hole with either large stones or stand bags with stone in just to try to prevent it getting any worse"
