More motoring misery for Exeter

Lights will save energy, but take time

Replacing traffic lights at tricky junction will take nearly a month

Motorists in Exeter will face more misery when troublesome traffic on a main route into the city are replaced.

Temporary traffic signals will be in place for nearly a month while work to upgrade the lights at the junction of Heavitree Road/Polsloe Road/Barrack Road and Magdalen Road/Barrack Road takes place.

The announcement follows weeks of work by Western Power who replaced an electricity substation, which closed the inbound lane of Fore Street in Heavitree at Livery Dole. Diversions between Magdalen Road and Polsloe Road caused long delays into Exeter city centre.

The new traffic signals at the two junctions will use about 70 per cent less energy than the current lights. The signals, poles and electrics will all be replaced by  Devon County Council engineers starting on Wednesday 29th August and due to end on Friday 21st September.

A spokesman says: “As much of the scheme as possible will be carried out using the existing traffic signals but the temporary lights will be used when the main signals are replaced. As with the permanent lights, any signalled crossing points will have rotating cones for blind pedestrians.”
