Charity incorrectly charged by British Gas

MP Simon Jupp with Marc Jobson, Head of Seachange | The Letter sent to Managing Director of British Gas

MP steps in to rectify error

Simon Jupp MP has sent a public letter to British Gas calling for them to make a significant donation to Seachange after they took £29,000 from the charity’s bank account in error.

Seachange is a charity that provides health and wellbeing support across Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth, Woodbury and surrounding villages. They have a primary focus on reducing isolation and improving health outcomes through activities, classes and support sessions.

The East Devon MP recently met with Marc Jobson, Head of Seachange, to discuss how the mistake of British Gas has impacted the charity’s cash flow and posed a real challenge to the delivery of their services.

After its Executive Office refused to directly return the money to Seachange, Simon Jupp MP is calling for British Gas to make a sizeable contribution to its energy support fundraiser which was set up in response.

Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon, said: “I am deeply disappointed that British Gas is refusing to return this money to Seachange. £29,000 is a drop in the ocean for energy companies but is vital for local charities like Seachange who provide essential support to those most in need. This is an opportunity for British Gas to do the right thing, so I urge them to take it.”
