£9m for providers and colleges
Millions of pounds are being invested in training up the next generation of construction workers across the South West.
Tens of thousands of placements will be created to help aspiring students plug skill gaps and boost industry growth before the next decade.
The funding will be shared among a variety of places, including Exeter College and the Cornwall College Group, for trainees starting courses in September to provide hands-on learning and boost employability.
The announcement is part of a much wider £625 million package aimed at recruiting up to 60,000 skilled recruits.
Figures from The Office for National Statistics show around 35,000 job vacancies in the sector, over half of which are due to a lack of required skills.
Two new qualifications are also being introduced for students who don't get the necessary GCSE grades.
The Cornwall College group has also been selected to join a pioneer qualification group, with a selection of high-performing schools, colleges, and training providers shaping the future for further education, particularly in sectors key to economic growth and construction and engineering.
This will help youngsters into work, rapidly boost house building and ease the transition from apprenticeships to full-time, well-paid positions.
John Laramy, who is the CEO of Exeter and North Devon Colleges, says, "We welcome this announcement and the continued investment in construction skills and technical education. Access to the industry is a crucial part of getting young people involved in the sector so we're pleased to see the expansion of placements alongside new and engaging qualifications."
"These reforms are another important step in supporting progression in apprenticeships and employability while helping to address skills shortages in construction. We look forward to working with the government and the industry to ensure these reforms are a success."
