A man's in custody after a man in his 40s died

A murder enquiry has been launched after the death of a man in Newton Poppleford early this morning [9 January].

Police were called to a caravan fire in a scrapyard, along with concerns for the welfare of a man inside, at around 2.30am.

When the emergency services arrived, the local man – in his 40s – was pronounced dead. His next of kin have been informed.

A 30-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody.

Officers say the Major Crime Investigation Team are currently in the initial stages of the investigation and ask anyone who may have information to call 101, quoting 0061 090120.

A number of police officers and specialist resources will remain visible at the scene over the next few days as part of our enquiries into this death.
