New appeal about A38 tyre tragedy

Police reveal more details

Devon and Cornwall Police have released more information about an incident on Tuesday in which a man out walking his dog was killed by a tyre coming off a passing vehicle on the A38.

The pedestrian was near the Exeter-boundcarriageway at Heathfield, Newton Abbot when he was hit around 10.30 a.m. 

In a statement on Wednesday, police say: "A Mitsubishi L200 was towing a livestock trailer when the trailer lost a wheel which collided with a 79-year-old male pedestrian who was walking his dog along the pavement. Tragically, the local man lost his life at the scene.

His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by a family liaison officer."

Any witnesses of the collision are asked to contact the police on 101, quoting log 261 of 1 September. Police would like to thank the members of the public for their patience whilst we investigated the scene."

The road was closed until around 5 p.m.
