Nightingale opening boosts morale

Covid hopsital "relieves pressure"

Around 24 coronavirus patients are expected to be treated at NHS Nightingale Exeter over its first few days taking inpatients.

Dr Rob Dyer, strategic medical director for the pop-up hospital on Sowton Industrial Estate, says getting the unit functioning for its intended purpose has given medical staff a bit of a boost as it relieves pressure elsewhere in the system.

He backs Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw's view that several weeks ago that staff shortages were preventing the hospital opening.  Dr Dyer says: "It's true to say it took us some time to work out how we would do it..but .having worked out how we could release staff from other activities there's absolute confidence we can work with safe staffing ratios."

Patients from around the south west who are most seriously ill from covid-19 could be treated at NHS Nightingale Exeter.
