Ottery woman killed in suspected hit and run

Local man, 23, released on bail

A pedestrian has been killed following in a suspected hit and run in East Devon.

The local woman in her sixties, who hasn't yet been named, was involved in around 11.30 a.m. on Thursday in Cadhay Lane, Ottery St Mary.

Passers-by called emergency services after finding the woman injured in the road. She was taken to then Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, but didn't pull through. Her next of kin have been informed.

Police says they think she was struck by a vehicle which subsequently left the scene without stopping, and are therefore treating it a suspected hit-and-run collision.

The road was closed for around 10 hours whilst scene investigation work took place.

A 23-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, failing to stop and failing to report a collision.

He has been released on bail until Thursday 20 April.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstance surrounding this death and are appealing for witnesses.
