Paignton Zoo stays closed

Not birds, but you still can't see them at Paignton Zoo

Bird flu measures continuing

Paignton Zoo is to remain closed until at least Wednesday after an outbreak of bird flu.

The Devon attraction was hit by the disease nearly two weeks ago and hasn't opened to the public since.

It has been working the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) to investigate the infection and put new biosecurity measures in place.

The zoo says almost all of its birds from the main lake and the peafowl are now in bio secure quarantine facilities around the zoo.

However a small number evaded capture and were humanely culled by a specialist team from APHA.

The zoo has completed a deep clean and moved the flamingos, just about the first animals visitors see when they approach the main reception, to a covered aviary elsewhere in the zoo.

They are now allowed to repopen until the APHA gives the thumbs-up. They are hoping that will be on Wednesday.
