Proposed new measures to tackle alcohol and legal highs

A new Order could be brought in to tackle the abuse of alcohol and so-called 'legal highs' in Exeter city centre. Councillors will discuss the proposal next week.

A Public Space Protection Order can be used to control anti-social behaviour which has a detrimental effect of people's quality of life.

Within the restricted area, a local authority can ban specific activities and fine those who breach the rules.

In this case it would target people drinking, taking psycho-active substances, urinating in the street, and putting up bivouacs or tents.

Councillors will be briefed on the proposal next week and asked to approve a consultation seeking public views, before making a decision later this year.
