Incident at Cullompton ends playing career

A rugby player’s broken her neck in a match in Cullompton.

Jessie Humber is being treated at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital after the incident on Saturday.

The Plymouth Albion Ladies’ player was helped by the referee and other players as soon as the severity of the injury became apparent.

She’s written on social media saying she’s gutted to have to put rugby behind her, but that thankfully the outcome isn’t worse. She writes: "How one game of sport I completely adore playing can change in one tackle....gutting to have to leave rugby behind me now and not to put that shirt back on, but all this support is amazing and it'll all be ok" with the hashtag "willmissyourugby".

Plymouth Albion has also thanked people for their support.

The match did continue - Cully Ladies beating Plymouth 26 - 12.
