Too many people are being killed or seriously injured on roads in Devon and Cornwall. Now there's a new target that aims to cut the numbers significantly over the next decade.
With 59 deaths and 853 serious injuries in 2018. It's thought the figures will be down in 2019, but more still can be done to make roads safer. The A38 is one of the main routes which the blue light services - police, fire and ambulance - are focusing on, working in partnership with local councils and Highways England.
Devon and Cornwall police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez wants to halve the number of fatal accidents by 2030. Progress has plateaued, she says, so old road safety messages may have to come back. Nationally more than a quarter of people who died in vehicle accidents weren't wearing seatbelts.
