Two missing after trawler sinks

Lifeboats, helicopters and a small armada of fishing vessel involved in the search for two trawlermen missing in the English Channel after their boat sank before dawn on Saturday have called off the search.

The Joanna C, registered in Brixham, sent a distress signal around 6 a.m., setting in train a major search and rescue. One man was found clinging to a buoy off the East Sussex coat at Seaford near Newhaven, where the 45-foot scalloper had been working.

The search for the two others on board continued until 11 p.m. on Saturday and re-commenced at first light on Sunday. However, the coastguard confirmed that attempts to find the two fishermen was called off around 2.30 p.m.

In Brixham, people have left flowers around the Man and Boy statue that honours the fishing community. On its social media channels, Exmouth's  RNLI said its thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected.

A fundraising page has been launched for the families, which is accessible through the image below. Initially set at £1,000, the 6 p.m. on Sunday, well-wishers had contributed around £5,000.
