Several serious crashes in Devon on Sunday

At least one person dies; others suffer a range of injuries, some serious

It's been a dreadful Sunday on Devon’s roads.

A holidaymaker died in Torquay after being hit by a 49-seater coach in the town. He was walking in Belgrave Street near the Riviera Centre when the accident happened around 9.15am. Devon Air Ambulance flew the man to hospital, but he didn't survive his injuries. Roads in the vicinity were closed for much of Sunday. A number of passengers are believed to have been on the coach, but police are asking for other witnesses too to call them on 101, quoting log 256.

Around 4pm, a car went off the westbound carriageway of the A30 between Sourton and Stowford Cross and near Okehampton  and rolled 40 metres down an embankment, trapping two people inside. With the wreckage being in an inaccessible woodland location, it took emergency services nearly two hours to rescue the casualties and get them to hospital by land ambulance.

Whilst that was going on, fire and ambulance crews were called to the A303 near Upottery on the Devon border where two vehicles had collided. One person managed to get out unaided, but another four had to be cut free and were then taken to hospital.
