South Western Rail strikes start Thursday

Union is "angry and frustrated"

South Western trains will be disrupted on eight days in the next few weeks, as RMT union members walk out as part of ongoing protests about guards.

The union is "angry and frustrated" at the company for "failing to respond seriously" to its call for talks. They say a deadline passed on Tuesday with "the same old tired response from the company" that doesn't address the fundamental issue.

They say their strike will impact "huge numbers of passengers through to September". The first one starts at one minute past midnight on Thursday and will run for the rest of the day. They'll work again on Friday, and then walk out again on Saturday, the first weekend of the Devon school holidays, when trains are usually extremely busy.

The RMT claims their strike is to put "public safety before private profits." South Western Railway is owned by First Group and MTR.

They plan to strike on every Saturday up to an including 1 Septemebr, except 25 August, as well as Tuesday 31 July and Friday 31 August.
