Teignmouth people-smuggling charges

Two remanded in custody

A man and a woman from Devon have been charged following a multi-agency people smuggling operation near Teignmouth on Monday.

A 27-foot yacht, ran aground off Horse Cove in Teignmouth at 4.10 p.m, quickly followed by the arrests of three people, two on the boat and a man in Essex as part of an ongoing investigation by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SW ROCU) supported by Border Force, the National Crime Agency (NCA), Devon and Cornwall Police and Immigration Enforcement.

Eight suspected migrants were detained whilst their circumstances were investigated.

Now James Wisbey, 54, from West Hoe in Plymouth, and Fay Miles, 38, of no fixed abode, Devon, have been charged with conspiracy to do an act to facilitate the commission of a breach of UK immigration law by a non-EU person.

After appearing at Plymouth Magistrates Court on Wednesday both Mr Wisbey and Ms Miles were remanded in custody. They will appear next at Exeter Crown Court on 14 January 2021.

Eight passengers on the boat have been arrested on suspicion of immigration offences and are in police custody.  A man arrested in Essex as part of the same investigation remains released under investigation.
