Tenants' group expresses shock at mass eviction

An organisation campaigning for the rights of private housing tenants in Exeter has expressed disgust at the sudden eviction of more than 40 residents of a local block of flats this week.

The building in Bartholemew Street had been repossessed... and bailiffs went in early on Monday morning and gave the tenants just 20 minutes to leave.

Exeter city council is re-housing them and providing other support.

The Exeter Private Tenants group says people need better legal protection to prevent this kind of thing from happening .. they can be contacted on 01392 202 055.

In a statement, the receivers Alder King say the residents had failed to comply with a court order in May giving themn a month to move out. They say they regret the distress caused to the occupiers, but that they have strictly followed the proper legal process to vacate the property.
