They'd tried to cross it

Three people have been rescued from the roof of a car which had been driven into the River Torridge.

A man called emergency service on New Year's Day just after 6 p.m., reporting that another car he was with had gone into the water at Little Torrington in an attempt to cross the river.

The driver had been unaware of the depth of the water and had ended up being moved downstream in the flow.

Three occupants inside managed to get themselves onto the roof of the car in an area off Woolleigh Bridge. When fire crews from Torrington and Bideford, along with a specialist rescue vehicle from Barnstaple arrived, each of the stranded people were given buoyancy aids while a boat prepared to launch.

After being brought back to dry land, the people were reported to be uninjured. There's no news of the condition of their car.
