Too many people with mental health problems in police cells

The mental health charity MIND is shocked by a report showing how many disturbed and suicidal people are being locked up police cells when they need professional medical care.

In Devon and Cornwall seven hundred and 84 people were taken into police custody under the Mental Health Act last year, even though the guidelines say they should be taken to a place of safety in a hospital or health location.

The joint report by policing and health inspectorates has highlighted the impact of spending cuts on mental health services in the NHS, and also recommends better training for police in dealing with these vulnerable people..

The local Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has expressed concern about the lack of services, and is looking into ways the police and NHS can work together to improve matters.
