Three tonnes of diesel recovered

A pollution response unit is continuing to work on the aftermath of a yacht fire at the weekend that sank the vessel and caused a scare about the diesel on board.

The £6 million vessel (and that doesn't include the value of the diesel) burst into flames on Saturday.

The incident is currently being treated by police as 'unexplained.

Three tonnes of marine diesel have already been removed by a pollution control unit. More is expected to be extracted on Tuesday.

Princess Pier will remain closed for the foreseeable future. A structural survey needs to take place and the pier won't open again until a salvage operation is over.

Torquay Council says it has initiated its marine pollution contingency plan

It says: "We are constantly monitoring the condition of the water and are taking the necessary precautions in terms of advising bathers and beach users of any changes to the water. Members of the public are asked to take note of any signs, messages, and instructions from Tor Bay Harbour Authority.

"We’d like to reassure everyone that the English Riviera Airshow and all other Jubilee events will be going ahead as planned this weekend. Final preparations for all aspects are underway for what is set to be a fantastic weekend of activity celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee."
