Could Exeter suffer more flight losses?

TUI is cutting jobs

A holiday firm that still runs flights crucial to the future of Exeter Airport is to cut jobs nationally.

TUI will slash around 8,000 jobs as a cost cutting measure because of the covid-19 crisis.

The travel firm has also pledged to reinvent holidays in 2020 by reopening hotels in Germany in the next coming days and other holiday destinations in Europe as those countries reopen after being on lock down.

To make this pledge though  it has warned of a restructure, which includes the UK job losses to cut costs by 30 per cent.

It was forced to cancel the majority of its travel programme in March due to the virus but has since been bolstered by a £2 billion state-backed loan in Germany.

Travel restrictions across Europe and further afield mean that the crucial summer season is still in doubt, leaving millions of holidaymakers unsure of their plans.

The airline flies twice daily out of Exeter Airport and following the collapse of Flybe in Exeter at the start of March is now the main airline based at the airport.
