Two die in sea drama

Next of kin informed

Two men have died after they were pulled from the sea in Torbay.

Emergency services were called to the incident at around 9 a.m. on Saturday 27 May to the coast off Oddicombe, north of Torquay.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene whilst the other died after being taken to Torbay District Hospital. They were both in their twenties. Lifeboats from both Teignmouth and Dawlish RNLI, together with the Devon Air Ambulance were involved in the operation.

Their next of kin have been informed.

Superintendent Ben Davies said: “Enquiries are currently ongoing, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

“With more people likely to be out near water this Bank Holiday weekend, emergency services are urging everybody to be vigilant to the dangers of the coast and follow water safety advice: https://www.hmcoastguard.uk/on-the-beach ”

It is the third tragedy in Devon waters in the past week. Last week a man in his seventies died when a fishing boat sank eight miles off the coast of Torquay. It has been reported he had gone to collect a lifejacket after the vessel began taking on water. Another man was rescued.

Another man died on Thursday after falling from cliffs near Budleigh Salterton. His death is not being treated as suspicious.
