UK's modern slavery prevention unit HQ is based at Exmouth

Exmouth Police Station

Town's police station is centre of the country's battle against most serious organised crime after drug trade

It's been revealed that the country's headquarters for investigations into modern day slavery is based at Exmouth police station.

Devon and Cornwall's chief constable Shaun Sawyer leads the nation's fightback against the most prevalent organised crime after the drug trade. His team's been given eight and a half million pounds to plug gaps they'd identified in their battle.

Mr Sawyer says what he's seen in his national role is some of the most inhumane crime possible - and it affects people even in a rural county like Devon. Car washes and farming sometimes provide the cover for exploitation.

It says it's even possible that people who are manoeuvred into prostitution or forced to work unpaid are unaware of how desperate their situation has become.

On Wednesday, the government minister responsible for crime, safeguarding and exploitation, Truro and Falmouth MP Sarah Newton, together with Devon and Cornwall's police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez, visited the national modern slavery prevention unit at Exmouth.
