There have been thirty-six assaults on police officers in Devon and Cornwall in the month of January alone - according to the Police Federation.
The organisation, representing rank and file officers, says it's not acceptable and shouldn't be considered an occupational hazard.
Regional chairman Nigel Rabbitts wants sentences delivered by the courts to reflect that - so that they pose a real deterrent to would-be offenders.
