A study's being undertaken into the history and social significance of beards - by an academic from Exeter University. .
Dr Alun Withey will focus on the period between 1700 and 1918 which saw a variety of men's facial hair trends, and the change from shaving being a medical procedure to a daily male hygiene routine.
His study will look at the social and cultural factors influencing the trends in beards.
