Watch: Cliff fall at Budleigh Salterton

Footage of the rock fall at Budleigh Salterton on Saturday afternoon

Emergency services were called but no was was injured

Fears that someone had been trapped under a rock fall at Budleigh Salterton on Saturday have proved unfounded, but has prompted Exmouth coastguard's rescue team to remind people to stay away from cliff edges, either on top or on the beach.

Below is a video from Dan Pike of the rock fall at Budleigh Salterton (western end) on Saturday 4 August. Emergency teams including the police helicopter, the RNLI's inshore lifeboat and South West Ambulance scoured the western end of Budleigh Salterton beach from around 5.30 pm, following reports of a major cliff fall. After a thorough search, including talking to boat-users in the vicinity, police were satisfied that no one was either trapped or cut off, and all units were stood down.

Cliffs around the UK are susceptible to crumbling right now, because of the prolonged dry spell and very hot temperatures. Earlier this summer, a teenage girl suffered potentially life-changing injuries when she was caught in a fall at Orcombe Point, just three miles from Saturday's drama.

Exmouth coastguard has asked people to "be extra vigilant" when walking on beaches underneath cliffs in this very dry weather. Stay near the water's edge in case the cliff does fall, to prevent you being caught up in it. In a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
