'Gaffer' steps down after five and a half years

Torquay United have parted company with manager Gary Johnson.

His departure comes on the same day as the bombshell news that owner Clarke Osborne is walking away from the club, which is now likely to be put into administration.

In a statement this evening the club said: “Following discussions between both parties earlier today, Gary Johnson’s departure as United manager was agreed by mutual consent.”

Johnson joined the club in autumn 2018, taking over from Gary Owers with the club struggling in National League South. He led them to the league title that season, and then took them to a National League play-off final which they lost on penalties to Hartlepool.

Since then, though, the club’s fortunes have waned to the point where they are now 12th in National League South again, and without a win so far in 2024.

Fans have been protesting over Johnson’s management in recent weeks.

In a statement he said: “After discussions today with the football club, we have mutually agreed that I should leave Torquay United with immediate effect.

“I have enjoyed most of my five and a half year tenure, but given the current situation, both parties agreed to part ways. I thank the players, the football staff, the office staff, as well as the chairman and directors for their support over this time.

“I wish the club all the best for the future.”

The club said everyone at Plainmoor wanted to place on record their sincere thanks for all of Johnson’s hard work during his time at Plainmoor.

Assistant manager Aaron Downes will take charge of the team for Saturday's home game against Aveley at Plainmoor
